“We try to bring awareness about pet care and get people to take better care of their animals,” said Beth Elam, Friends of Rowlett Animals.

The adopt-a-thon will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and feature a microchip clinic, a oxygen rescue demonstration and a demonstration by Aelos.

The microchip clinic will be available from 2-4 p.m. As part of the adopt-a-thon, microchip and are provided for $18, which is a fraction of the normal cost.

One shelter employee Tammy Drake, who has been at the shelter for 8 years, says that she always bonds with the animals she considers the “underdogs”.  “I love to be with animals, I want to help the ones that have not been given a fair chance. My heart goes out to them,” Drake said.

Drake has been taking care of a husky mix named Jasmine for the last three weeks. Jasmine was hit by a car before she was brought in. Drake bonded so much with her that she came in on her off days to make sure that Jasmine was fed and was carried outside to use the restroom.

The Rowlett Animal Shelter hopes the event brings focus to the number of homeless animals the it takes in, which can range anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 annually. The shelter has around 70 cages for cats and dogs as well as designated areas for small exotic animals, such as sugar gliders and potbelly pigs.

The shelter hopes that people looking to purchase a new pet will come by the shelter first. Adopting an animal saves can save two animals, shelter officials noted, the one adopted and the one that can take the empty space.  “People do not realize some of the beautiful animals that can be had at the shelter for much less than going to a breeder,” said Lisa Tomaszewski, another Rowlett Shelter Attendant.

If you would like to volunteer for work at the shelter or with Friend of Rowlett Animals, or if you are willing to donate items such as cash, food, toys, or any other pet care necessities please contact the shelter at 972-412-6219.
