    PET OF THE MONTH!

Have you ever wonder what it is like to be a prisoner in your own home?

For dozens of animals at the Rowlett Animal Shelter that is an unfortunate reality. The animals sit in cages patiently waiting for the right person to parole them and give them a better home.

Some dogs quickly find homes, but others wait much longer. Dakota, pure-bred Labrador retriever has been waiting in her kennel for two months for someone to add her to their family.

The shelter strives to improve the quality of life for all animals, not just the ones housed in the shelter.

On Saturday the shelter takes part in the 14th Annual North Shore Animal League Adopt-a-thon, a nationwide event that promotes awareness of homeless animals and encourages people to be more involved in their pet care.

“This event is extremely important for the community. It creates awareness about the shelter and the pet overpopulation problem,” said Marnie Story, a Rowlett Shelter attendant, “Our dog kennels have been at or above capacity for the last year.”

The event is sponsored by The Friends of Rowlett Animals and Petco. The Friends of Rowlett Animals is composed of a group of volunteers who support the shelter and community in taking care of its animals. The group has been together since 2005 and has already accomplished a lot in the community. Two accomplishments include purchasing pet oxygen masks for the fire department and hosting a fundraiser to purchase a bullet proof vest for Aelos, the police department’s K-9 officer.

The group also has established an adoption buyback program that lowers the cost of adoptions, and this year is giving $500 college scholarships away to students at both Rowlett and Rockwall high schools.
